Program curriculum

Over the duration of this online program, you’ll work through the following modules:

Module 1 A framework for healthcare leadership
Explore the behaviours of outstanding leaders, and the importance of building trust and collaboration when working with others.

Module 2 Emotional intelligence and leading self
Understand the importance of self-awareness, compassionate leadership, and your well-being as a leader.

Module 3 Strategic leadership
Explore how to create an inspiring vision as a strategic leader.

Module 4 Leading and managing change in healthcare
Explore the principles and tools needed to facilitate change in healthcare.

Module 5 Developing and leading high-performing teams
Learn about the key components and tools for developing and leading a high-performing team, and the importance of team dynamics in relation to culture and psychological safety.

Module 6 Leading in healthcare: Tools for impact and influence
Learn how power and dialogue are tools for impact and influence, as well as the importance of a leadership development action plan.

Program Directors

Tina Smith

Director of the MHSc Program in Health Administration and Associate Professor (Teaching Stream) in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME)

Professor Smith is director of the MHSc program in health administration and an associate professor (teaching stream) in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto. Tina teaches graduate courses on leadership across the Institute. Her research interests focus on innovations in leadership education and learning. She is currently chair of North & East GTA Stroke Network (NEGTASN), serves on numerous boards and professional committees, and consults on leadership and change in health services organizations.

Christine Shea

Director of MSc Quality Improvement and Patient Safety and Assistant Professor (Teaching Stream) in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME)

Professor Shea is the director of the MSc quality improvement and patient safety concentration in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) at the University of Toronto. Her research and teaching focus on leadership, change, quality improvement, and patient safety across IHPME’s programs. Christine brings over 20 years of experience working around the world as a consultant in high-reliability organizations, including healthcare, aviation, rail, and the nuclear industry.
